Arch Street Public School Students Thank Donors for their New Ice Skating Helmets
Friday, April 29, 2011, Ottawa, ON — On behalf of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, Arch Street Public School students will be thanking the donors who contributed $25,000 for the purchase of ice skating helmets for students in need. The Education Foundation of Ottawa has organized a special event on May 5 at 9.30 a.m. at the Brian Kilrea Arena 2185 Arch Street next to Arch Street Public School. Students will be showing off their new ice skating helmets and amazing skating ability.Principal Bambi Ross says, "Learning to skate is a relatively quick process and students love it! We want to foster and promote an excitement for a physical activity that they can enjoy throughout their lifetime. Who knows what lifetime passion or career path might be ignited!"Marty Owens, Vice-chair of the Education Foundation says "Our Board of Directors has been very pleased to see the wonderful response of individuals, businesses, other charities and our two major hockey teams. Keeping students safe while they experience outdoor sports is a valued part of the mandate of our school board. The mission of the Education Foundation is to support students in need and with this helmet project we have ensured that every child can skate safely." Vice-chair Owens will be on hand to thank representatives from Scotiabank, the Community Foundation of Ottawa, the Sens Foundation, the Ottawa 67s, Lowe's, the law firm of Doucet McBride and the Think First Head Injury Prevention Program at CHEO as well as many private donors who contributed a grand total of $25,000. The funds were used to purchase 850 helmets that were shared among 3,000 children this winter. The Education Foundation of Ottawa is a registered non-profit charity that responds to the urgent needs of students. Programs include emergency funding for food, winter clothing, and medication. The Foundation is managed by a volunteer Board of Directors made up of community, education, and business leaders.
